Final Task Production Blog: First day of filming

On Saturday, March 6, we started our production process. Juanita and I went over to Harlow's house in order for us to film the necessary scenes since that is the main location of our opening sequence. We were limited on the scenes we could film that day due to whether conditions. It was raining pretty heavily which meant we would not be able to film any outdoor scenes. Not only this but one of our actors, the actor for the mother in the film, was unavailable, which meant we wouldn't be able to film any scenes that included her in it either. Due to these circumstances, we were only able to film scenes 8 and 9.

Scene 8 was the scene in which the daughter stepped into the house and ran up the stairs. We had some difficulty at first when trying to film the scene because we weren't sure of how we wanted the daughter to walk in and go up the stairs while still maintaining covid guidelines while off screen. The daughter was supposed to be coming into the comfort of her house, which meant she would probably be taking her mask off under regular circumstances. However, since the videographer, being me, was so close, we decided to keep the mask on in shots which we could not distance ourselves in order to prevent any potential spreading of Covid. We also faced some challenge when trying to film the shots of the daughter running up the stairs. We knew that we wanted to have several shots of her heading upstairs and then combine them during the editing process, however, we were unsure of how we should film each of these shots and from what angle. We decided to film a couple shots from a couple angles so that we could later in the editing process determine which one would fit best.

Scene 9 took place in the kitchen and included shots of the daughter going into the kitchen and then looking into the fridge. All of the shots for this scene were particularly easy to film and didn't require nor take up too much time. We did encounter a minor issue when trying to figure out how to film the shot of the daughter walking into the kitchen. We realized that if we filmed the scene how we originally planned, the title sequence would look choppy due to us not including any shots between her exiting the stairs and walking into the kitchen. We figured that if the daughter was seen leaving the stairs and then out of nowhere walking into the kitchen, the film sequence would seem a bit confusing to the audience. So what we did is that we filmed an extra shot to put in between the two other shots. We filmed a shot in which the daughter can be seen exiting the stairs, walking down a mini hallway, and then entering the kitchen. We figured it'd be better safe then sorry to have this extra shot because we can always just not use it during the editing process, but if we do actually need it, it's there.
