Music Video Research Blog

To begin our research, the four people in our group got on a FaceTime call all together to decide what themes we wanted to go with. It took us a while to actually get to work, but we eventually started. We decided on a sadder, slower, theme that reminisces life. This matches lessons that we have learned in the pandemic, and how to truly value our time. We all learned not to take for granted the special little moments shared with the people around us. These moments are what makes us us, and we learned to appreciate them way more, as we should. These lessons are what inspired our choices for our project.

We chose the song, You Should Be Here by Cole Swindell. We watched the music video for this song along with other Swindell songs and other videos for different songs in the genre/theme. On the FaceTime call, we talked about what we wanted our music video to look like. We listened to the sing a couple times in order for us to fully understand the true meanings of the lyrics and get a sense of what this song is actually about. We wanted to make sure that our video reflects on the characteristics of other videos of this same genre, but is still unique. We found that our original idea was very similar to a pre-existing video, so we edited it a little bit.

After making a loose plan, we did some more research to understand what elements we should incorporate into this music video. We examined an analyzed the CLAMPS seen in other professional music videos. For costumes, we each looked at what we had at home to see if any of our things could work or if there was anything else we should get. We found that most of the things we already owned would work well for the idea we had in mind. Looking at the all the different videos, you can see that the style of editing used in each one is quite different. The differences in all the videos allowed for us to put some creativity and uniqueness into our own video due to this genre, in particular, having such broad common characteristics.

When doing our research we found that throughout the different music videos there was a pattern of lighting and camera styles used. We discovered that within the sad country genre, most videos tended to have dark lighting and most shots consisted of close shots of the actor's faces. This gave the music videos a gloomy feel which we hope to incorporate into our own music video. Researching helped us decide which constructs we should follow and which we should make our own. This is an important part in creating a unique project, while still making sure it matches our theme and genre.
