Final task Production blog: Finishing the Filming Process
On March 22, my group and I officially finished the filming process. As mentioned in the perviously blog, we finished re-filming scene 8 and part of 9 but we also finished the last part of scene 9 on the same day as well. When filming scene 9, we had a bit of trouble filming the scene in which the daughter is reaching for a bowl from the cabinet and then serving herself crackers. This was due to the size of the kitchen. It was a bit crowded when we tried with the cameraman, being me, inside the kitchen. What we decided to do instead was film that scene through an opening that was on the side of the kitchen. The shot still looks like how it was intended but its not as close as it was when the shot was filmed from inside the kitchen. The cameraman being outside also helped maintain Covid-19 guidelines, since we had to be 6 feet apart due to Harlow not being able to wear her mask. Another minor detail we changed was that in the script we put that she would grab carrots out of the fridge, but we ran out of carrots, so we chose crackers instead. We were going to use either apples or oranges but then found that while rehearsing how the food was gonna fall, both the apple and the orange bruised too easily and went bad too quickly.
Another thing we changed was the shots 7, 8, 9, and 10 were all supposed to be filmed from different angles/perspectives. In these shots the daughter was supposed to grab the bowl, fill it with crackers, walk over to the fridge, and then drop the crackers. All of this was supposed to be in the span of all 4 shots. However, as stated before, due to the size of the kitchen the angles we were able to use were limited. Because of this, these 4 shots had to be filmed from the same perspective/angle. When filming the very last shot, which is the shot in which the daughter's reaction to the discovery of the note is captured, we ran into some trouble. This shot was a low angle shot but since the daughter was already kneeling on the floor we couldn't quite figure out the way we should position the camera to achieve this while still making the shot look nice. We decided that using a selfie stick was the best approach to filming this scene and it actually turned out really well. We then tried bringing the camera closer to the daughter's face to simulate a "zoom" effect. We figured it would be a nice touch to the end of the title sequence and that we could always cut it out in editing later of we didn't like it.
Overall, the filming process was lengthier then we had originally imagined, but we were able to accomplish all that we wanted to within the time frame we had intended. Our next meetings will be about staring the editing process and putting together all of our shots. During this time, we might have to re-film a shot or two as seen fit during the editing process, but for the most part we are done with filming.
