Final Task Production Blog: Filming
On March 21st, Juanita and I went over to Harlow's house in order to film scenes six and seven. These were all of our outside scenes, in which both Harlow and Juanita were acting in. This meant that I was the one that filmed both of these scenes. When filming these scenes we realized that there were many shots that we had to change in order to fit into the vision that we had for our title sequence. One of these shots that we changed was the establishing shot at the beginning of scene six. In this shot we originally intended for the daughter to be seen walking in it but instead we filmed it with the neighbor gardening in the background instead. In the second shot, we also intended to have the daughter walk with her head down and more fast paced during this shot however, we decided to change this to the girl stumbling instead. We did this in order to show that the stumbling is what made the neighbor realize that the daughter was there in the first place and attracted the attention towards her.
We decided that we would take out the third shot. This shot was the shot in which the daughter rounded a corner, however, we realized that there wasn't exactly any corner for the daughter to round other the the entry way to the house, but this would have ended up looking weird. Since this shot wasn't essential to the storyline anyway, we just decided to delete it. We also changed the fourth shot, in which the neighbor was originally supposed to be in. We decided to instead only include a cowboy shot of the daughter hiding in this shot in order to show to the audience that the daughter really does not want to have a conversation with the neighbor. The fifth shot was supposed to be a regular mid shot of the daughter but since we decided to not reveal the neighbor in the previous shot yet we had to do it in this shot. What we did instead was that we filmed an over the shoulder shot from the daughter's perspective in which the camera pans to reveal the neighbor that is directly across from the daughter. We thought that this would be a much more interesting way of revealing the neighbor rather then just having a regular shot of her. Shot ten, which was supposed to be a cowboy shot of the daughter walking into the house got changed to a mid shot instead. Shot eleven, which was supposed to be a mid shot of the neighbor waving goodbye was instead changed into a cowboy shot.
While filming these scenes we had many difficulties, as can be seen by the many changes to our story board, one of the main difficulties being that there was a car in the way. We were having difficulty filming around the car and finding a way to film without the car being in the way. We tried multiple angles, shots, and perspectives until we finally got something right that worked. This was also filmed during spring break and the location of the scene is a block away from the beach in Fort Lauderdale, so that meant that there were many tourists. Every time a tourist, car, or helicopter came by we would have to stop filming which made filming much more challenging and elongated the process.
