Final Task Production Blog: Filming Difficulties

During this past weekend, March 13-14, our original plan was to go to Harlow's house and film all the scenes in which the mother of the story would appear in. We previously had not been able to film this scene due to the actor, Harlow's mom, not being available and not having enough time to work with us. This past weekend she was available and so our plan was to make use of this time and film the scenes that she was in while we still had the chance. However, as the weekend came up, we realized that our schedules, the schedules of Juanita and I, would not allow for us to be able to meet up this weekend. On Saturday both of my parents were out running errands/working so I had to babysit my sister, which meant I would not be able to film. On Sunday, I had a volleyball tournament which would've lasted up till around 4 or 5 pm, and by that time it would be too late to film due to us not having enough time. Juanita, similarly, had other unexpected plans that came up last minute which did not allow her to be able to go either.

Due to these circumstances, we decided that Harlow would instead film her mom on Sunday on her own and without us present. These scenes in particular did not require many people to film and so that's why we figured there was no need to postpone the filming of them for a later date. When filming these scenes We also decided that this would be the best thing to do Covid wise since it would expose us less to each other, therefore minimizing the risk of one of us getting sick if the other had Covid. We figured there was no need to not only expose ourselves, but further delay our filming process, for scenes that only required 1-2 people to film anyways. Another factor that we considered when making this decision was that we would be having a break from school in the upcoming days. In the next week, we will be having spring break, which lasts about a week and a half. We figured that since we had all this time off of school, we could film during this break instead, especially since the three of us don't really have plans for the majority of the break.

When Harlow was filming these scenes, however, some issues were encountered that required some shots to be changed. In the first scene, in which the mother is seen running, we decided to put a close up shot instead of a long shot. This was due to the difficulty of filming the scene since Harlow was running alongside her mom, making the movement of the camera more apparent. We decided that this was good though, because the movement would further express the emotion and sense of urgency occurring in the scene. The first shot of the fourth scene got changed to a cowboy shot instead due to Harlow being too close to film it as originally intended. The last shot of the fourth scene got changed to a mid-shot and the first shot of the fifth scene got changed to a long shot. There was also a shot in which we might have to re-film at a further date. This is a shot within the third scene in which a tilt can be seen. This is due to Harlow saying "go" while filming the scene, however we might be able to cut the sound out for this shot during the editing process.
